"I have a table that has about 15 fields which have integer values ranging from 1 to 9. What I need to do is simply count the number of times that a value (say, 9) appears in each field."

In a query, use columns like this:

NinesInField1: -1*(Field1=9)

NinesInField2: -1*(Field2=9)

and so on. The (Field1=9) evaluates to -1 if True, or zero if False, so multiplying by the -1 gives you a 1 if the field is a nine, otherwise you get a 0. So you can then sum each of those columns to get your answers.
